But the scenario totally changed after World War I, as the soldiers thought that it was unfeasible to use pocket watches, and so they switched using to wristwatches. This was how wristwatches became popular and became a part of the trend that is continuing till date.
It's not only the designs of watches that have changed but also the displays have undergone major transformation. There are many types of displays available, like Analogue, Digital and Lighted Displays. The main function of a watch has always been to show time but it is not only restricted to that any more. Several watches of today even show current date and even the day of the week, as well and also work as alarm clocks. These days many digital watches are having features with which the wearer can know the time just by the sound coming out of these, which is an absolute help for blind people.
Some of the watches are water-resistant too, that is, they are waterproof in their nature and are used mostly by scuba divers, by people who do water rafting, etc. They are strongly built and don't usually break that easily. There are other watches too, which are meant only for kids, but usually carry similar properties as water-resistant watches, so regardless of how kids use them they never give away that easily.
Watches nowadays are more than just a necessity, for they have become fashion statements too. People with high spending capacity generally tend to flaunt their expensive watches from popular brand names. Such watches are often termed as classy, vintage, luxurious, etc. and are quite popular among the celebrities. Common men too envy these beautiful timepieces, and many of them also buy these for the purpose of gifting them away to the ones they dearly love.
